01 Missing Halloween I genuinely cried.
02 Twins in Paradise This is a masterpiece.

I've actually watched 50+ animated short films over the past few months, and these two are my most memorable favorites.

Provenance

Every detail in the list comes from the film's own YouTube page, and each entry records the day it was checked. Nothing is taken from wikis, fan sites or memory.

Field Where it comes from
Title, channel, upload date, length The video page
Credits The video description, as the creator wrote it. Long contributor lists (contest winners, patrons) are summarised and point back to the description
Genre Only when the creator states one in the description (Missing Halloween: "Cute/Macabre")
Checked The date the entry was compared against the video page

In the page, these are stored as schema.org VideoObject fields: name, url, uploadDate, duration, author, creditText, genre, and sdDatePublished for the checked date. The same block is what search engines read as structured data, so the page and its metadata can't drift apart.

Motivation

Short animation on YouTube is easy to lose: films sit on individual channels, credits live in descriptions that few people open, and the people who did the voices, music and sound rarely get named when a film is shared. This is one quiet page that keeps a few favorites together and names everyone the creators themselves credit.

Quick start

There's no build step and nothing to install. The whole site is public/index.html plus its share image.

python3 -m http.server -d public 8000   # preview at http://localhost:8000

Any static file server works. This repo deploys public/ to GitHub Pages on every push to main.

Editing the list

The list lives in the <script type="application/ld+json" id="film-data"> block near the top of public/index.html. Each film is one ListItem with a VideoObject:

{
  "@type": "ListItem",
  "position": 3,
  "item": {
    "@type": "VideoObject",
    "name": "Film title",
    "url": "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID",
    "embedUrl": "https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/VIDEO_ID",
    "thumbnailUrl": "https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/hqdefault.jpg",
    "uploadDate": "2026-01-31",
    "duration": "PT7M5S",
    "author": { "@type": "Person", "name": "Channel name", "url": "https://www.youtube.com/@handle" },
    "creditText": "Credits, as the video description gives them.",
    "sdDatePublished": "2026-09-30"
  }
}
  • position is the order on the page.
  • genre is optional.
  • review is optional: your own comment on the film, shown under its credits, as { "@type": "Review", "author": { "@type": "Person", "name": "Your name" }, "reviewBody": "..." }.
  • Update numberOfItems when you add or remove a film.

Make your own list

Everyone's favorites are different, and this project is open source so you can build your own page with them. It doesn't have to be animation: any set of YouTube videos works the same way.

  1. Click Use this template to create your own copy with a clean history, and give it your own name. You can also fork it if you'd rather keep a link back to this repository.
  2. Replace the films in public/index.html with yours, and the comments with your own.
  3. Change the title, description, canonical URL and og: tags at the top of the same file to your own page's URL (https://<your-username>.github.io/<your-repo-name>/).
  4. In your repository, go to Settings → Pages and set the source to GitHub Actions. If you forked, also open the Actions tab and enable workflows, since forks don't run them by default. Your page goes live on the next push to main.

Once it's up, share it. Open an issue here with your link so others can find it, and send it to the creators you featured, who are usually glad to hear someone loves their work. Improvements to the site itself are welcome as pull requests. Before you publish, read the disclaimer: you're responsible for what your list shares.
